My screen started going black, then funny lines & dots started running all over, now the screen won't come up at all.....|||It sounds like a video display problem to me. Either your discrete graphics chip on the motherboard or the video card just went bad. If you are using discrete gaphics (a chip on the motherboard instead of a video card) you can still use a video card if you have a slot on the mother board for it. Either that, or replace the mobo. If you have a graphcs card, you will need to replace it. Check device manager and find out what kind of video source you currently have|||There are three possibilities. Either the monitor is bad for some reason, the video circuitry is bad for some reason, or there is a very serious problem with the rest of the computer (motherboard, cpu, memory, etc.) Your problem is to diagnose exactly which of the three is the case before you go off buying monitors and video cards that you might not need.
You need help from a friend with a computer. What you need to do is borrow his/her monitor and hook it up to your computer (with the power off) and see if you can at least get to Safe Mode. It may look strange because the graphics will be set wrong, but you should see something that looks like a picture. If you can't, then you can reasonably conclude that your monitor is okay, but, just to be sure, you can try it on your friend's computer. If you can see a reasonable picture with your friend's monitor, then you know that yours is bad.
So, now if you know that your monitor is okay, then how do you know whether it is the video circuitry or the rest of the computer. Well, if you have a video card, then pull it out and try it in your friend's computer. Your friend should be able to see something, although it might not look great. If your friend can see a picture, then your video card is okay. If not, then you probably need a new video card...
Now, if you have on-board video, then you need to borrow a video card from a friend. But, in all likelihood, your video circuitry is bad and you need to buy a video card for it. It could be something else, but that would be rare. Whether or not you can test it easily depends on whether or not your friend has unlimited patience and trusts you with a video card. :)
Now, here is the problem. If you turn off the on-board video and add a video card, then it is possible that the card will overload your power supply. You need to find the specs for your computer and see what the specs for the card are before you buy it. It may be difficult to find a video card that will work under the power limits that you have. You can look at the specs at the reference below, but it doesn't give power. It does say that you have an AGP slot, so you can use an AGP video card if you want. It does not say whether it is 4x or 8x or whatever - you may have to email them to find that out. I suspect that since they include a slot for an AGP card, one would work without overloading your power supply.
If you don't have a friend to help, then you can gamble and buy a video card (AGP), since these are probably less expensive than paying a tech to examine your PC... Of course, it might be the monitor or the monitor cable that is bad.|||I had the same thing happen and it was my screen replaced it and all was fine
